RAREPAIR 1900 SIGNED ANTIQUE WOOD WINDOW SHUTTERS EDWARD B HINDES SAN FRANCISCO. Rarest pair of signed handmade, bifold, interior wood shutters by Edward B. Hinders and Co of San Francisco that date to the early 1900s. The open and close nicely.
The varnish is original and showing age with "alligator" skin in places. There are shallow Mars to finish as expected for something over a hundred years old. They are original with brass hinges and finger grips.
There is a good chance that the hinges may have been added at a later date. Each are signed in the brass grips which number two each panel. Research shows this was a Gilded Age company that began in the 1890s. Edward Hindes company was located at 411 Mission street. He owned prime real estate including buildings in the area.
I have added photos of newspaper articles about him. Shutters measure 28 1/2" H x 9 7/8" W x 3/4" thick per each panel with an overall measurement of 19 1/2" W.
