PAIR very RARE, signed PARIS antique French HANSI character dolls YERRI & GRETEL
Featuring an extremely RARE and hard to find PAIR of signed Paris, French character dolls, here are, 9 1/2" tall, "YERRI" & "GRETEL", designed after the French, Alsace-born, illustrator, Jean Jacques Waltz's (writer, illustrator & dollmaker) designs, who was known as "Oncle Hansi and modeled by P. Gallais, Paris, France, circa 1917. They were the largest and rarest size produced. They have five-piece jointed bodies and socket heads of a (hard celluloid or composition type) material that is most often referred to as "terracota" or "Prialytine" and have, side-glancing, blue. Googly painted eyes, single stroke eyebrows, painted tiny eyelashes, accented nostrils, closed smiling mouths and original brown yarn wig (on Yerri) painted brown hair (on Gretel) and striped stockings & black shoes and wear all their original. Traditional classic, Alsatian folklore outfits with. Meticulous attention to detail, such as Gretel's "coquarde" (small tricolor rosette) on her huge black hair bow reflecting the authentic French costume and complexion of. They also each have one hand molded to hold an accessory such as Gretel's umbrella and Yerri's bouquet of flowers. This highly sought after pair of antique dolls won the "First Prize Contest of French and Ally Dolls in Paris 1917" and were distributed by Marshall Field and Le Printemps stores.
