This is a pair of Antique Post-Civil War 1871 Formal Portrait Oil Paintings on canvas of a Gentleman Farmer last name of Smith and his wife. They owned a large amount of land which he farmed between Springfield, Illinois and Jacksonville, Illinois and lived in a mansion out in the country. Both of these paintings are signed and dated in different places on each oil painting. I can make out the date but not the painters signature.
Both paintings measure 22 across x 27 high & both matching frames measure 32 across x 36 high. Paintings are in good antique condition with no craquelure. Both frames are period with heavy gilt gesso design & in fair condition to good condition. The frame of the woman is missing a piece of wood at the top.
Guarantee line: American School 19th Century. Extra Notes: This painting is not by Eastman Johnson. The signature could be Wunder or Munder but attempts to match it to a specific artist were not successful. This is a period portrait of a man of certain stature likely done by an American artist.
