Please note that these are two engravings on either side of the same paper being 1851 restrikes by Bohn. These copper engravings made by James Gillray bear his signature & the date completed together with details of the original publisher in 1798. James Gillray 1756 or 1757 - 1815 was an English caricaturist and printmaker famous for his etched political and social satires, mainly published between 1792 and 1810. Gillray has been called "the father of the political cartoon", with his works satirizing George III, prime ministers and generals. Regarded as being one of the two most influential cartoonists, the other being William Hogarth, Gillray's wit and humour, knowledge of life, fertility of resource, keen sense of the ludicrous, and beauty of execution, at once gave him the first place among caricaturists.

These caricatures are from this restike in 1851 & are in good condition the subjects are as follows. Image size is 26 cms by 36 cms on a paper size of 32 cms by 48.5 cms. There is some foxing to the paper god sign of age.

2 Image size is 26.5cms by 37 cms, on a paper size of 32 cms by 48.5 cms. The key indicators of a print coming from the Bohn Edition are (i) the presence of a number in the top, right-hand corner of the print (the number is most commonly in the image itself, but may be outside in the margin); (ii) the fact that the Bohn edition was issued without colouring; and (iii) the fact that the strikes for the main published volumes of the Bohn Edition were printed on both sides of the paper.

Escalating prices have meant that good examples of major works by Gillray can be very hard to come by at any price. These restikes are rising in value. Please see the photos which form part of the description. This is a very nice unusual item. Any advice or comments from collectors will be gratefully received.
