Amazing workmanship on this rare pair of signed nightstands by Jacob & (his son) Josef Kohn of Vienna. Intricate "Carvings" on the front appear to be tooled leather.
The Kohns began making furniture in 1867 and are best known for making the first Bentwood furniture the company merged with Thonet some time around 1922. Kohn furniture is in all of the major museums worldwide, including MoMA. Their earlier furniture, especially case goods like these, are difficult to find and are increasingly sought after.We will not sell them individually. Size: Cabinets are 31" tall, about 15" deep and 16 wide, one drawer and shelf on bottom with carved/tooled door. Inside shelf is not original, but rest is all original with a nice warm patina. The best of these we've come across in more than 20 years. Items may be picked up in Central NY State near Cortland and Ithaca.
Convenient to Syracuse and Binghamton areas, about 2 hours north of Scranton PA and about 1.5 hours west of Albany. The total weight of both the two tables and 2 marble tops is more than 100 pounds. The tops are removable and weigh around 22 lbs each. Each table is about 35 pounds each. It is strongly recommended that these be picked up by professional shippers who will blanket wrap and insure them.
