1900's Pair of Large Porcelain Wall Plates Guerin & Cie Limoges. Hand Painted & Signed Pastoral Scenes in Blue and White. For your consideration is a stunning pair of large ceramic chargers or wall plates.

Very fine porcelain made by William Guerin, who opened his porcelain factory in Limoges, France, in 1872. Guerin produced lot of "white ware, " or "blanks, " pieces with no decoration. They were exported, primarily to the United States, where amateur china painters and professional decorating companies bought them to add their own hand-painted designs. Many of the porcelain pieces were decorated in the factory and the here presented plates are done by Guerin's professional artists, since they bear the mark "Feu de Four". Guerin & Co used a special experimental firing process that they referred to as "feu de four", an enhanced by them decorating technique, first developed by Sevres in the 1830's.

It meant that the item was painted by the artist, then the special firing was done, so the painting is under the glaze in shades of blue and white, not with a cobalt glaze, but with a blue color in lighter hues. The pastoral scenes depicted in the platters offered here are just incredible, so exquisitely executed.

Both feature small waterside cottages with women involved in country daily life chores. On one a girl is sitting with goats, on the other a woman is feeding chickens and a girl is playing with a dog. Both chargers are painted by the same artist and are signed R.

They are also marked with three W. Guerin's backstamps, as pictured. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN THE PAGE FOR MORE PHOTOS!

18.3 diameter (across) each one. Minor old rim flake repair on one, as pictured. Slight wear on the gilt, commensurate with age and use.
