John Bell seems to have specialized in lake views. He is represented in The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum and Scarborough Town Hall. The painting with the distant castle is signed J Bell and has an indistinct date which is thought to be 1852.
The back of each work bears an old label for Kerr and Bowman (carvers, guilders and artists colourmen etc) of 24 Queen Street, Aberdeen. This firm was active at this address in the 1850s. There is another old but illegible label. Both paintings appear to be immaculate. They are well framed in black, ebonized frames with black circular mounts.
These appear to be more modern than the paintings but do a fine job in setting off the pictures. One of the mounts may have been cracked as there is a slight unevenness to it but it has been restored and does not detract in any way from the framing and certainly not from the pictures. The works could, of course, be reframed but could be hung immediately and would grace any collection.
