Offered is this extraordinary pair of large antique Italian hand painted and signed Albarello Apothecary Pharmacy Jars. These were for drugs like dried flowers or powder. Since the jar had to be easy to hold, use and shelve, it's basic form was cylindrical but incurved for grasping and wide mouthed for access to the product. A piece of paper or parchment paper was tied around the rim and served as a cover for the jar. This incredible pair of jars are hand painted with a Lion juggling balls while his back feet are also on a ball.
Both are hand painted with the medical term back then"TRIFER-MICA-SO". One jar is 16.5 inches tall and the other is 17 inches tall. The Albarello Jar that is 17 inches tall is signed what I see as "Guazzini" but the way they wrote back then, a'z' could be as's', so I don't really know.
In any case, this pair is rare and exceptional. Together they weigh around 20 pounds. This is a really rare pair that you want to add to your collection.
