Antique Pair of German Paintings Oil on Celluloid Bucolic Scenes signed c. Description: Presented is a a pair of beautiful small, almost miniature oil painting. They picture bucolic landscapes with human characters in style of Renaissance paintings - one with horse carriage crossing a small creek, another - with a river scene. Very nicely painted with a lot of character and impression. The painting is oil on celluloid, very nicely preserved. The celluloid was invented in mid-1800s and became very popular at the end of 1890s for many different purposes. It was a popular media in 1890s for small and miniature paintings because of a smooth surface that could be painted without gesso. The pictures are small so the paintings are very precisely done with small strokes. A work of a true artist. It came to me from Germany so I assume it is German. Both pictures are signed with the same signature, unfortunately illegible. The pictures are framed in brass repousse frames with exclusive dark red satin matting and silk-wrapped backs creating a charming matching pair. It is also protected with a slightly curved original glass creating a wonderful optical effect. I have two more paintings from the same estate and of the same framing but by the different artist - I will be posting them this week. It is 7.5" by 6" framed, 4.5" by 3.5" picture. Condition: Pictures excellent, one frame with a replacement hook. Size: 7.5 in by 6 in.
