Pair vintage Japanese floral wood block prints Bakufu Ohno signed matted framed

  

Lovely pair of matching floral wood block prints. Lily and a peony in bamboo vases decorated with children playing. Two of the roughly 70 known works by noted Japanese master Bakufu Ohno. Produced and published by Hanga-In Co.

In Kyoto Japan, their label is on back. Signed "Bakufu" in Japanese, B. Ohno in english, with publisher blocks. Believed to be in original wood frames and mountings, 15 x 18 3/4 inches.

Prints are 10 x 15 inches, on dark blue paper. Prints are in excellent condition, wood frames have a few minor dings. Recently acquired from a collector in Northern Virginia.

He worked primarily as a painter. Among collectors of Japanese art prints he is best known for several series of fishes, but his work includes flowers and birds as well. He did not carve and print himself as the Western-oriented artists did. His prints were created after his paintings by professional carvers and printers and published by Hanga-In. Print artists who were active during the first half of the twentieth century can usually be attributed to one of the two art movements of the period - the shin hanga or the sosaku hanga "camp" of woodblock printmakers.

Not so with Ohno Bakufu. His style does not fit into either of these two groups.
