This figural vase is one of the finest examples of 19th Century German bisque that I have ever offered on the secondary market. Marked KPM above crossed lines and incised 1582, this antique vase was modeled by Professor Reinhard Möller for A. Kister Porcelain Manufactory in the 1870s! Kister Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1831 in Scheibe-Alsbach, Thuringia, Germany. In 1863, the son of Johann Kister, August Wilhelm Fridolin Kister, became proprietor of the factory.

To further improve the product range, Kister employed a teacher at the arts school in Sonneberg, Professor Möller as leader of the modeling department. From 1890 onwards, the factory started to make new figural groupings, such as female dancers, courting couples, and centerpieces. Here, this porcelain masterpiece depicts a young courting couple at a stone water well.

The troubadour plays a lute to serenade his paramour who is perched on the edge of the well. Möllers hand-painted figural vase is undoubtedly an impressive creation with its ornate decorative accents.

From carefully placed gilt enamel beads on the exterior to exquisitely sculpted facial features, this vase is truly remarkable. Overall excellent, preowned condition with two small flaws: the top of the well is chipped (cannot be observed unless looking at the vase from the top), and the boys pinky finger is broken. This original KPM vase still displays extremely well and will be a fantastic addition to a German bisque collection. Signed on the right side, R. A larger piece, this vase measures approximately 11.25H by 8W by 6.5D.
